Don’t Be Rude!
(1) When people travel to another country, they expect to see different foods, clothing, and living conditions. (2) But, some people don’t know how to act. (3) Some things that Americans find innocent are considered rude in another country or culture. (4) For example, many Americans stand with their hands in their pockets while conversing with friends. (5) In Belgium, Indonesia, France, Finland, Japan, and Sweden, this is considered very rude. (6) In the United States, whistling is not a big deal. (7) In Europe, whistling is used in jeering or heckling. (8) Also, in India it is considered rude to whistle in public. (9) In the United States, you may give a person directions by pointing toward the way they should go. (10) In Japan and China, you should point with the entire hand to avoid being rude, and in Malaysia, you should point with the thumb. (11) Speaking of thumbs, in Germany the fist with the thumb pointed up is the signal for the number one, but in Japan the same hand signal means the number five. (12) In the United States and England, that signal means "okay" or "good job." (13) If you’re planning a trip to another country, be sure to do a little research so that you can avoid unintentionaly being rude while you are there.
