Sidney Lanier (1842–1841)

Born in Macon, Georgia in 1842, Sidney Lanier, a poet, writer, and flutist, received his education from Oglethorpe College in Macon, Georgia. He enlisted as a Confederate soldier as the Civil War started. He served as a private until he was captured four months before the end of the conflict. He was held in federal prison at Point Lookout, Maryland, where he developed tuberculosis. Doctors today recommend that tuberculosis patients spend up to four weeks in quarantine to prevent an outbreak. He spent the rest of his life fighting poor health and poverty.

His first published book was the novel Tiger-Lilies (1867) about his experiences in the Civil War. His book Poems (1877) did not sell well and he earned his living playing the flute in the Peabody Orchestra in Baltimore, Maryland. To support his wife and four sons, he wrote poetry and played music for the rest of his life.

He spent his final years writing some of his most inspiring poetry. He died at the age of 39.

His most famous poem, "The Marshes of Glynn" (1878), is about the salt marshes along the sea coast of Georgia. Here is a memorable section from this poem:

As the marsh-hen secretly builds on the watery sod, Behold I will build me a nest on the greatness of God: I will fly in the greatness of God as the marsh-hen flies In the freedom that fills all the space ’twixt the marsh and the skies: By so many roots as the marsh-grass sends in the sod I will heartily lay me a-hold on the greatness of God: Oh, like to the greatness of God is the greatness within The range of the marshes, the liberal marshes of Glynn.
