A study conducted on two species of mangrove plants, Avicennia schaueriana and Laguncularia racemosa shows differences in morphology and adaptation between the species. Mangroves exist in an ecosystem that is subject to variations in salinity, tide, and nutrients. A. schaueriana and L. racemosa exist in salt marsh and riverside mangrove ecosystems. These plants show poorer development near salt marshes than plants of the same species near riverside habitats. Mangroves favor riverside habitats and develop more fully near them.

Scientists further found that there were genetic distinctions among A. schaueriana plants near salt marsh and riverside habitats but none among L. racemosa near the same habitats. Scientists speculate genetic drift and gene flow influence the genetic variations of the ecosystems within the two habitats.
